Dog Nutrition Facts: Keep Fido on a Schedule

Putting and keeping your precious canine on a timetable and regular diet can’t be over emphasized. Dogs thrive on routine, and if you don’t establish a routine and stick to it, your dog will take control and create one himself.
Dogs without routines and a leader or ‘alpha dog’ take over the roles themselves and you lose control.
If you feed at the same time (give or take a few minutes) every day then when his bowl hits the floor your dog will be there to eagerly eat it. In fact, he will learn to anticipate being fed.
If you thought dogs couldn’t tell time, try missing his regular feeding time one day.
The most effective thing to do when feeding a finicky dog is to feed him the regular time and if he does not eat the food within 15 minutes, pick it up and put the food away. The next time that bowl of food goes down on the floor is the next regular feeding scheduled. Period! You will be amazed at how fast your dog catches on to the fact if he doesn’t eat when the food is there, he gets nothing!
If your furry friend is getting enough palatable and nutritious food two times a day, you have fulfilled your duties for feeding him. Don’t let Fido involve you in a battle of wills like a spoiled child who won’t go to bed without a tantrum. That food dish is in YOUR control!
